I am breathing on my own!!

Today was a big day for our Callie, they took out her breathing tube and she is off the ventilator! Normally, the next step down from the Ventilator is a breathing machine called CPAP, but they decided to skip that machine and try her on a nasal cannula. So far, so good!! Nasal cannulas deliver a higher than normal amount of oxygen to help babies oxygenate their bodies. Nasal cannulas also provide a small amount of pressure as the oxygen blows into the nose, which can help babies’ lungs to stay inflated and can remind them to breathe. She has been relaxing and breathing on her own since around1 o'clock...we can't begin to tell you how much more comfortable she looks! They have said that many times preemies will take a step back and have to be intubated again, but we are praying that won't happen and Callie will continue to breathe on her own! Either way, we are just so grateful she is getting a break from the ET Tube!

This picture is right after they took the breathing tube out. As you can see, she is happily blowing bubbles! The white on her face is residue from the tape (this is now all off!).

We also want to point out that our daughter was wearing purple in the last picture because she is a girl, NOT because she is cheering on the Ravens! Daddy will let her decide if she is interested in sports, but if she is, she will be chanting E-A-G-L-E-S! Also, notice the size of a full term baby bib on our girl!

  7. Shouldn't Callie decide what sports team she roots for on her own? :) Keep up the good work!

  14. Hi Guys! We wanted you to know we have been following our cuttie pie, having issues with my google password- so sorry we haven't posted in a while.
She looks so beautiful! I personally love pink not PURPLE and maybe Uncle Rick and I can send her some USF flare as we do not think she wants to go for the RAVENS either.
I am pretty sure a cute girl like Callie is a football fan all the way!
That's so great they research the stuff like Kangaroo care- its truly amazing the power of love!
Miss you all- love Rick and Selena

  21. Hello Mommy & Daddy!
I am a friend of Vonnies (works with Lee). I have been following your blog since the beginning and just loving every step Callie is making!

I am a mom of twin Preemies born at 28 weeks in November 2008. They were born 1lb14oz and 2lbs1oz. They are now 17 weeks old and are about 9lbs. They stayed in the NICU for 9.5 weeks.

I know everything you are feeling right now...and just wanted to offer you support if you ever need another NICU mom to talk to. Your sweet little girl is making GREAT strides...Nasal Cannuala is a big step for a little baby! I pray she excels on it!

NICU babies are STRONG! and most time stronger than their parents! It takes a special kind of momma and daddy to go through this...you both are doing great!

    Keep up the Kangaroo care!

I have tons of Preemie clothes (in doubles) that I would love to give to you, if you would like them.
