Callie had her first bottle today!! It was so exciting! Yesterday, they extubated her midday and she had a relatively rough afternoon with Bradys, but that is to be expected the day after surgery. They started her on small feeds last night and put her back on full feeds today. She rebounded faster than we could have hoped for! This afternoon they decided to try her sucking on a bottle. It is very common for preemies to have issues with sucking, swallowing and breathing all at once and can take them several attempts before they get the hang of it. Our little Callie surprised everyone again. She had no issues with the bottle at all. They were hoping she would be able to take 5 cc's from the bottle and when we checked it, she had drank 7 cc's and wanted to keep going! We are so proud of our little girl! At this point, they will feed her this way pretty infrequently because preemies use a lot of calories sucking and she needs as many as she can get to grow. But this is a great sign of things to come! Also, Callie has officially doubled her birth weight...she is now 2 pounds 11 ounces!

I honestly don't have the words to describe how I feel. She is amazing!!! I couldn't be happier for you guys. And I want Callie to know that her neighbors, Liam (10) and Riley (6), keep updated on her progress and can't wait to meet her. In fact, Riley is imagining Callie to be her first babysitting gig a few years down the road! Happy Easter you guys. What a gift your precious Callie is! Congrats from all of us.

Drink up, Callie. You are soon going to hit the 3 lb mark. It's great to see you with that big bottle. You take after your cousin, Jack. He was a big eater when he was a baby - he loved his milk. It will make you big and strong.
ReplyDeleteWe love you.

Wow. What a great thing to see...Callie feeding from a bottle. Amazing! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis picture and post brought tears of joys to my eyes, just as so many of your posts before did. To know that she will be ready and able to handle a bottle when she's a little bigger is great news, then to hear that she's doubled her birth weight is thrilling too. We love you Callie and keep up the good fight.
